Xavier Evacuation History

This is an copy of the Xavier Wiki page, I've cleaned it up on Sept, 4th, 2005.

Dear Xavier Families,

UPDATE Still building the larger site, but I wanted to set up a mailing list and group where you can talk about registration and winter simester. It's under Resources on this page.

UPDATE Status of this page. Hey, everyone. Yesterday, I got together with some other software developers and librarians, to figure out how to continue to help people with organization. I came up with Our Mission, and I'm growing a Group Of People to assist me. Today, Sep 3rd, is a site wide setup, and tomorrow is community placeholder creation. Monday, I'll be back here to help you all, by creating discussion groups, to do lists, and by gathering up Dr. JW Carmichael's excellent research into a concise table. Thank you.

ThinkNOLA Xavier Group - At Google Groups. This is an open forum for Xavier students, facutly, family, and friends.

It's open so we can share information, and not fuss with registration forms.

[edit] Evactuation Related

I'm going to move this to a history page - Alan Guierrez

Please register the names of your loved ones in this directory Finding Survivors. It is very easy to create a card. You can use the directory to let people know when someone is okay.

Please e-mail me directly alan@engrm.com with updates about the evacuation. I'm unable to follow the forums anymore.

Please let me know the status of LeAndre Foster and Derrick. I'm worried myself.

Thank You for Editing! People have started adding content. If you can put it in block formatted, and it looks okay. Save it, and I'll organize it. (Please preview, though. If it looks very strange, e-mail it to me.)

[edit] Xavier Inbox

If you have information about Xavier that you would like to see here, please go to the Xavier Inbox, and follow the instructions there.

[edit] Finding Information

Taiji Charichaem's Xavier Blog

Alan, I am Taiji Carmichael, Dr. JW Carmichael's niece. Dr. Carmichael (Premed) is safe at my parent's house in Commerce TX. He has a blog to help his students at http://xavierafterkatrina.blogspot.com/. He is posting what info he has about universities helping Xavier students, locations of students/faculty/staff there. He can be reached at xupremed@yahoo.com.

All my best, Taiji

Making the Most of NOLA.com

I got a message asking about Xavier Nuns. I responded with this message.

If you have the time, can you register at NOLA.com forums, and post a link to the Xavier page with your question. The Orleans Parish forum is best.

Let me know if you need help.

The problem with the forms is that information "drops off" the bottom of the page when there are too many message. Linking to the Xavier page gives people somthing to forward, and the Xavier page can capture the answers.

When you post a message to the nola.com forums. Repost the same message every thirty minutes, so it stays visible. It's not rude. Don't panic. Eventually someone who knows will contact you.

Whey they do, contact me, so I can put the information on the Xavier page, so everyone else can know without searching.

It sounds convoluted, but it's where we're at information wise in the wake of the disaster.

Thank you very much.

[edit] New Information 9/1/05

I'm the webmaster for Xavier and maintaining the website www.xulaemergency.com from Indiana. I have just posted new information about the students and staff. I have also established an e-mail so those inside can notify others. I'll forward on messages as quickly as I can.

This e-mail address cannot respond personally to any inquiries about the safety of people. Still it's a tool we hope people can use to communicate on their situation, go to the site for details. This site is the official website for emergency matters related to Xavier so all the information can be considered credible.

http://www.xulaemergency.com Peace.

also....

as of this writing, I have been assured that of the group that was in the dorms, everybody is fine and there are no illnesses, deaths, or other life threatening conditions among the Xavier students and faculty.

The official emergency website has been updated as of 7 pm EDT and that is the official information I have. Again, the messages I receive cannot be forwarded to people unless I have some contact info and I really have very little.

But it is good to know that so many people are going to be okay. Personally speaking, today is the first day I haven't cried about it.

This Page is Unofficial - But I'm trying to keep it up anyway. I hope it is of some help to Xavier students, faculty, and family. If someone in the Xavier community would like to take over this page, or contribute to it (drop information that I could format), I can set you up. It is very easy to edit these pages right from your web browser. Contact me alan@engrm.com Thank you.

[edit] Enrollment

University of Oregon: http://www.uoregon.edu/newscenter/9.01.05-Katrina-help.html

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: If you are contacted by a student or parent regarding the possibility of late admission because of the hurricane, please suggest that they contact the Office of Admissions and Records at 217/333-0302. For financial aid assistance, please refer callers to 217/333-0100. We are able to accommodate up to 40 students and have already received our first one, who will be on campus this weekend and will start classes next Tuesday. For students who cannot come to Urbana, but want to continue their studies this fall, we are exploring ways to connect them to our Guided Individual Study courses.

We also are exploring ways to accommodate displaced faculty and graduate students, and we are sharing our engineering and planning expertise through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other response agencies.

[edit] Urgent

Do you have any information on the location of the Nuns on campus???? Are they on the bus? All we know is that they stayed for the storm. My wife is the niece of Sr Rita Hurley. She is a biology teacher at the university.

Just listened to a Xavier mom on Fox news calling in to report that the buses have arrived and they are loading the students. - Email message from Xavier mom, LaVerne

Xavier Larry King and Rev Jesse Jackson - A transcript from CNN.

Xavier by celesteken, 9/1/05 20:06 ET - The number for Rainbow Push is 773-373-3366. All I know is what I was told by my friend whose daughter we have been trying to get out of NO, along with ALL of the Xavier students. We have a network of friends and family with so many different contacts. We have called and e-mailed so many entities. I am praying this last phone call I described previously, from her contact in California, whose child attends Xavier, is true. Supposedly they were on the bridge surrounded by National Guard. I would hope we are not being given false info. That is why I waited until I got some sort of substantiation that Jesse Jackson was indeed involved. We have to believe and pray that they are OK.

Xavier - Jesse Jackson - by celesteken, 9/1/05 19:35 ET - I am glad it is confirmed. We called Rainbow Push on Tuesday to tell them our plight. Today someone named Mark from Rainbow Push, called my friend whose daughter was in KD, and told her Jesse Jackson was going to meet the students in Baton Rouge. NBC Nightly News just had a story stating that Jesse Jackson and his guards were headed to New Orleans from Baton Rouge. An hour or so ago, my friend also got a call from one of the other mothers who had heard from her son, stating that they were still on the bridge, SURROUNDED BY THE NATIONAL GUARD!! They had food and water. I didn't want to believe it but now I do!!!!!!!

JESSE to rescue XAVIER by pmwest, 9/1/05 19:11 ET - I am a recent Xavier alum (Class of 2005) and I was still in New Orleans at another institution. I am safe at home in Natchez, MS. I just wanted to let all the concerned parents know that the ABC Baton Rouge station is visible in Natchez and I just saw Jesse Jackson on there at about 5:15 Central time. He said that he had 3 buses with him on the way to pick up students at Xavier, Dillard, etc. All of the hard work and phone calls have seemed to pay off. Prayer does change things and I pray that the remaining students, staff, and faculty all get out safely.

9-1-05 - 11:49 pm - I would like to thank everyone for all of their efforts. A special thanks to the Faculty, Mrs. Dillan, Mrs. Levy, Mrs. Ballard , Ms. Mack Mr. Joseph K. Byrd and Mr. Baham. It's not over yet, but I am thinking ahead. We all should make it our business to be as diligent in following up on why our children were put in this much peril. I am not pointing any fingers, but the analyst in me always follows up on what went wrong and what we can do in the future to make sure it doesn't happen again. Xavier Students STILL on BRIDGE by XUStudentSis, 9/1/05 16:17 ET The students are still on the bridge. They have not had a food or water drop since they got on the bridge at about 11:30 AM. I called the coordinator of the rescue ops (who is a private volunteer) and they said there aren't any aircrafts available right now. They are busy picking up people on their rooftops. I told them that this is the same thing. They can't get off the bridge and they do not have food and water, that is the same as the people on the roofs. I really am not sure where they are taking them. Southern University told the folks at XU that there wasn't any room left. My sister told me that the nuns said they are going to Houston. Pls help, we need to get them off the bridge. I have asked the coordinator to get water and food to them at least. It is over 90 degrees out there!!

Xavier by celesteken, 9/1/05 12:58 ET - XUStudentSis - Have you heard back from John Peterson, who gave you the news about the students being on the bridge. My friend just got a call from her daughter, saying they were still there. It has been over an hour. I am now worried that they will be on the bridge far too long. Is there anyway you can contact Mr Peterson?

Update on Xavier by cac0307, 9/1/05 12:52 ET I just spoke with Ms. Mack a few minutes ago and she said they got out. Everybody is on a bridge near the school waiting to hear what's next. She thinks they might be going to Dallas. She will be calling me when they get to a destination.

Xavier NJ Students by mtnest282, 9/1/05 13:07 ET - Xavierites from Jersey please see article from the Star Ledger related to displaced students attending universities in the Golf Coast States affected by Katrina who are NJ residents.

Helicopters & Xavier - XUStudentSis - 9/1/05 11:31 ET

They have been placed on a highway overpass by helicopter. They are awaiting another helicpter to take them to an undisclosed location. This was CONFIRMED by my sister, another student's mom (who spoke to her daughter), and John Peterson at the National Communication Center. Mr Peterson actually called me back a couple of minutes and told me that he "was going to make my day"! He sure did!!

Xavier Outreach - LeAndreMom - 9/1/05 9:37 ET - I was just informed that water from the lake is no longer coming in. So the water should stay at it current level. The French quarters is nearly dry because it is on higher elavation.

XUStudentSis - k2d2 - 9/1/05 9:37 ET - My husband's name is Kevin. He is flying to Atlanta today. He will join my son, Kwesi. He is calling your father now. I reached radio station KKDA in Ft Worth Texas and was able to speak on the air. I emailed Star Jones and others are emailing her. I am concerned that they are not focusing on relocating but they seem to be more concerned about the looters. I am also concerned that they may just take them to the Superdome, out of the frying pan into the fire. If they take them to Baton Rouge, we can get them.
