[edit] Getting Started

Begin by creating a login at this page:

http://thinknola.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin

Once you've created a login you can edit any page by clicking the edit tab at the top of the page.

Documentation: Please see documentation on customizing the interface and the User's Guide for usage and configuration help.

[edit] Editing

If you login you can edit: Go here and log in:

http://thinknola.com/wiki/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin

Wiki is a web site that that you can edit using plain text. You don't need a fancy editor.

You click the edit tab an you see an edit box with plain text in it.

Benearth the edit box, there are buttons with the options to Save page, Show preview and Show changes. Show preview is especially useful when learning how to edit the wiki, because you can preview how your text will actually appear before it's posted.

[edit] Section Headings

There are special formats for wiki section headings, which are converted to html headings. Using the section heading syntax rather than simply using bold or italicized text to title a section is important because headings get higher priority in searches. Headings are surrounded by equal signs. One equal sign on each side of a title is the top-level heading, but since the page title itself is the top-level heading, you'll never use single equal signs. Your first heading will be the second level:
Section Heading
Subsections follow with increasing numbers of equal signs
Subsection Heading
[edit] External Links

To create a link to a page on the web outside the wiki, use single brackets. You can link to

CNN
with those brackets. The markup above produces: CNN
The New York Times
The New York Times The first part is the link. The second part, which is separated from the first by a space, is the link text. Without the link text,

the link looks like this: [1]

[edit] Internal Links

To link to a page within the Think New Orleans wiki, use double brackets. You can link to
French Quarter
with those brackets. The markup above produces: French Quarter You can use link text in an internal link as well.
UNOP
produces UNOP instead of Unified New Orleans Plan, but goes to the same page. In this case, you are using the pipe character ("|", SHIFT+\) instead of a space.

[edit] Creating New Pages

If the text between double brackets is not the name of an existing page, the wiki will create a new page with that name. New page links are shown in red until text is added to them. Be careful not to create a new page unless you intend to create that article as well. If you're not sure whether an article already exists to link to, try searching for it before including it as a link.

[edit] Text Formatting

Use bold or italic for emphasis within a paragraph; use section heading syntax to title a section.

[edit] Bold Text

Enclosing text between three apostrophes on each side will make it bold:
bold text

bold text

[edit] Italic Text

Enclosing text between two apostrophes on each side (single apostrophes, not a double quotation mark) will make it italic:
italic text

italic text

[edit] Lists

[edit] Bulleted Lists

To create a bulleted list, begin each line with an asterix. Sub-items, sub-sub-items (and so on) can be created by increasing the number of asterices:

* list 1
* list 2
* list 3
** list 3.1
** list 3.2
*** list 3.2.1
** list 3.3
* list 4
  • list 1
  • list 2
  • list 3
    • list 3.1
    • list 3.2
      • list 3.2.1
    • list 3.3
  • list 4

[edit] Numbered Lists

Hash marks create numbered lists:

# item one
# item two
# item three
## item three point one
## item three point two
### item three point two point one
## item three point three
# item four
  1. item one
  2. item two
  3. item three
    1. item three point one
    2. item three point two
      1. item three point two point one
    3. item three point three
  4. item four

[edit] Uploaded Files

[edit] Images

To display an image on a file, the image must be uploaded first. To upload an image, go to Special:Upload (which can also be reached from any page via its link under "Toolbox" in the left sidebar). You can use the "Browse" button to locate the file on your hard drive. To display the image in your article on the right side of the page, resized as a thumbnail with a caption, use the following syntax:

. For instance,

displays:
Mardi Gras Indian
Mardi Gras Indian

This is a good format for images if you don't have any specific need for the image to be larger, smaller, right-justified, centered, or displayed in any other way. Note that the top of the image is one line beneath the image tag. To align an image with the section it's illustrating, insert it beneath the section heading, before the text.

See How to edit a page: Images or Extended Image Syntax for instructions on other ways to display images.

[edit] Linking to Other Uploaded Files

You can upload other sorts of files to the wiki, such as Adobe pdf files. The process of uploading is the same as uploading images; go to Special:Upload. To link to the file within an article, use this syntax:

For instance,

displays Green Project's Adopt-a-House

[edit] Test Pages

Feel free to create any Wiki Test Page you like. Start by creating a link to the page that starts with the words Wiki Test, like Wiki Test By Alan. And try a few things.

Please update this page with more information, ideas for use.

[edit] What to Wiki

There is a lot of information out there, but it is poorly organized.

I'm gather information about the Xavier exacuation. People are starting to count on it, so I can't stop, but I can't take on any more info-gathering tasks.

If you watch the forums, the candidates for a Wiki page are obvious , pick a neighborhood, school, or hospital and keep a page updated.

[edit] Template Recruitment Messages

[edit] Template Forum Message

I am creating web site to collect and organize information from the forums, and from within the city.

It is like http://about.com/ but it is for New Orleans communties. You adopt a "community" and become a "community guide" . You then keep a set of pages organized with resources for a particular community.

A community could Xavier, Oscher, American Can, Frenchman, Bywater, New Orleans Public Library. Any group of people that needs to catalog information.

I'm gathering volunteers form the University of Michigan and through my software connections to format the information. I need New Orleans citizens to put it in the right place.

Please volunteer to be a community guide. You will be paired with web editor who will help you format your information. We need local savvy.

E-mail me Alan Gutierrez directly at alan@engrm.com .

You can really help people by organizing their information. Please, help.
