The Katrina Krewe, established in November 2005, consists of thousands of local and national volunteers, whose goal is to provide relief along common thoroughfares in New Orleans from the trash and debris that resulted from Hurricane Katrina. Katrina Krewe is also fostering anti-litter awareness among residents, schools and businesses within the New Orleans area through various public service programs and activities. The Krewe has shifted their twice weekly clean ups to once a month.
Graffiti Removal: In our efforts to clean up the city, Katrina Krewe is partnering with Desire NOLA to help fund the services of Operation Clean Sweep, an anti-graffiti task force run by Fred Radtke. Fred is also working in conjunction with the FBI and the NOPD with regards to graffiti. Volunteers please utilize his Graffiti Hotline 914-406-0077 to report graffiti so that, together, we can better address this issue. (City Ordinance 22-253). See Broken Windows theory below.
Distribution: Katrina Krewe volunteers are currently presenting local businesses with a "Keep it Klean" spiel, calendar, and a check off list to be utilized in area maintenance. We could use some helping hands to distribute them, please contact Becky@CleanNO.org if you are willing to help.
Sign Purchase: Katrina Krewe has purchased official "No Dumping/Littering" aluminum city signs to be installed by the City's Sanitation Department in targeted areas around town. A recent ordinance was passed raising the fine to $1000 for offenders.
Sign Removal: City Ordinance 66-284 states it is illegal for anyone to place "vertical litter" (corregated signs) on neutral grounds, posts or public spaces (other than those placed by the city). It is legal for you to remove all "non-city" signs on "public" property at your discretion. Yard signs may only be posted on "private" property.
Drain Clearing Awareness: Residents, please go out on your curbsides and clear trash away from the drains to allow rain water to flow properly! New Orleans Brain Trust Group.
Streetlight Outtages: Report to Public Works 658-8040 or 658-8000.
