Heaven’s Gate Community Playground provides nurturing for the physical, mental, and spiritual development of neighborhood youth by providing a safe place of peace and play.
Heaven’s Gate is a fenced area that was created from two vacant lots as a safe playground for the children of the lower 7th Ward, where no public playgrounds or facilities exist for children. Since 2002, Heaven’s Gate has operated as a private enterprise for providing free services to on average 250 children per large event, and 20 to 100 children regularly visit the playground. In addition to providing an area for physical activities such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, and other games, Heaven’s Gate has served the needs of these local youth by providing school supplies, toys and food whenever possible. Field trips, outdoor movie evenings and educational games are also provided. Our annual events are the School Supplies Give-away, Easter Egg Hunt, Thanksgiving Turkey Give-away, and Christmas Toy Give-away and Holiday Party.
The goal of Heaven’s Gate Community Playground is to expand opportunities for neighborhood youth by enclosing an area that will accommodate an indoor basketball court with tutoring, game, and exercise rooms to provide services to these youth. Parents will be welcome to come in and play with the children and help run the center. While welcoming parents and neighbors, this building’s purpose is to excite, inspire and engage children and draw them in to a safe, positive and fun place, off the streets.
Each academic quarter, children will be required to bring in their report card to get a pass to the center. Their parents will have to sign liability waivers, an agreement to volunteer, and all visitors will agree to follow our conduct code. Police background checks will be required of all of our staff and volunteers. We will serve free nutritious afternoon snacks and affordable, fresh, take-home hot dinners for families.
To assist our returning neighbors, our plans include a technology center where community members can use computers, phones, fax, the internet, and copiers. This will be an accommodation to help anyone dealing with insurance claims, government agencies, and small business recovery.
