If neighborhoods are having a special cleanup day, call 504-731-8627. The EPA collectors can do a special patrol.

Deadline looming: After June 30th, 2006 the State of Louisiana will have to match Federal cleanup spending. Until then it is all Federal spending. Get your debris to the curb this weekend so we can save our state funds for rebuilding.

To help remove hazardous materials from the debris going to Louisiana's municipal landfills, EPA collects storm-damaged electronic goods and full or partially-filled hazardous materials containers. We dispose of hazardous materials in landfills designed to handle them safely.

If you bag hazardous houshold waste in regular garbage bags, it is very important to mark hazardous household waste with a sign that reads HHW so that EPA collectors know to pick it up.

EPA curbside collection teams will pick up:

  • batteries
  • paint & workshop supplies (no latex paint)
  • cleaning & pool supplies
  • lawn & garden products
  • pesticides
  • thermometers & thermostats
  • automotive products
  • fluorescent light bulbs
  • guns, explosives, ammunition
  • gasoline, oil, solvents
  • storm-damaged electronics
  • other hazardous chemicals

Here's how you can help:

  • Collect flood-damaged hazardous waste containers and place them curbside in cardboard boxes or other open containers or clear bags (or bags marked with the letters HHW). Unless such items are clearly identified, EPA's curbside collection crews might not pick them up.
  • Household hazardous waste materials should remain in original manufacturer's containers.
  • Guns, explosives or ammunition should not be mixed with HHW or other general debris. Call 1-800-401-1327 for pickup (available 24 hours a day).
  • Household hazardous waste should not be dumped or poured down drains.
