Delgado Chancellor encourages faculty, staff and students

September 6, 2005

Dear Delgado Community College Family,

Thank you for responding to the requests posted on the Louisiana Community and Technical College (LCTCS) website, http://www.lctcs.net. I appreciate, also, that you registered and provided information that will facilitate communicating with you. Please call your colleagues, encourage them to register through the website or the LCTCS Hotline, 225-922-1633. Also, visit the Louisiana Board of Regents (BOR) website, http://www.regents.state.la.us for periodic updates on the status of all higher education institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina

Please continue to pray for the safety of the individuals who remain in Greater New Orleans, on the Gulf Coast, and the military, police, and emergency personnel attempting to rescue them.

Due to the hard work of a Delgado team, including Steve Cazaubon and Steve Zeringue, and the gracious staff at the LCTCS office, headed by Lura Kamiya and Dr. Walter Bumphus, payroll checks for full-time personnel are now available. Checks will be available for pick-up at the LCTCS office located at 265 S. Foster Dr., Baton Rouge, La 70806. If you are unable to visit the System Office, you may call the LCTCS Call Center to provide your contact information to have the check mailed to you. Special provisions will be provided for anyone who is located in a shelter at this time. We are sensitive to your situation, and we are handling this on a case-by-case basis. Again, we ask that you please call the LCTCS Call Center regarding this matter.

With the search, rescue and evacuation efforts in Orleans and surrounding parishes in progress, our collective responsibility now centers on reclaiming and rebuilding this great region of Louisiana.

Our role in this venture is to reopen a more vibrant Delgado Community College that responds to the educational needs of a community that will undergo social and economic revitalization. I am grateful to the many individuals who have conveyed their personal support of this aim. Your steadfast commitment will be required during this period and beyond as we focus on the future.

Please start by ensuring the security and comfort of you and your loved ones. Register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at 1-800-621-3362 or atwww.fema.gov . FEMA will assist with food, shelter, and other immediate needs and work with you to begin addressing your longer term needs. Contact the Red Cross atwww.redcross.org to locate the center established in your current community for hurricane relief. Register with your insurance company, now.

During the coming weeks, the Delgado team will be working with LCTCS and BOR officials on, among other things, the following initiatives:

• Determine the status of facilities and locate temporary facilities • Locate students and, where possible, retain them in online courses, provide them with direct instruction at clinical sites and remote locations, or get them enrolled at other colleges • Restore information technology functions, including the website, online course capability, and student and administrative systems • Launch a public relations campaign to ensure that everyone receives regular status reports • Get approval to implement administrative processes that expedite reopening the college • Create state and regional teams whose task will be to keep everyone connected to the college and community

In closing, please be assured that I will do everything humanly possible to garner the support needed to reopen our college soon. I will need your help with this effort and, thus, look forward to working with you during the weeks and months ahead.

Warmest regards,

Alex Johnson Chancellor
