Abandoned Cars
From New Orleans Wiki
"I got some clarity today on how best to expedite the process of getting abandoned flooded cars moved, now that the towing contract is in place. The LA State Police is in charge of identifying and stickering cars. Once they are stickered, the towing company will come and retrieve them in 3 days. I spoke with the woman in charge of the process, Sgt. King, who states that they have predetermined "zones" where they will be sweeping and stickering (kind of like the Army Corps I guess).
For individuals wishing to report cars in their neighborhood, you can either call Sgt. King at Troop B at (504) 471-2775 or compile a list and drop it off at the Troop B headquarters in Kenner. If anyone decides to make a list, let me know and I will contribute mine."
Followed up with Sgt. King. She said that lists should include the location, VIN, color, make and model. She said that most of the abandoned cars will have had their license plates removed, so the VIN number is the best identifier of a specific car. Almost all cars have their VIN number on the drivers side dashboard, so that it is visible through the windshield. This page from the Virginia DEQ includes a nice graphic shows the location.
The Louisiana State Police will use a grid system to clear cars from the City of New Orleans. The grid is based on the City of New Orleans Districts and Zones. The State Police will be stickering and removing cars zone by zone.
Any lists compiled can be left with Troop on Williams Blvd.
Owners can find out if their cars have been towed by calling (877) 244-2540. To inquire about boats, they can call (877) 244-2451. Both numbers are staffed 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
