Wiki Spammers
I’m going to revive the Wiki. I mentioned this before.
After a bit of study, I’ve determined that it’s okay to continue with the old Wiki’s content, including all the spam messages added by spammers.
Wiki spammers edit Wikis to add links to their own sites, that usually sell same awful things that email spammers sell. Special tags in the HTML will prevent search engines from rewarding spammers with a higher ranking. I’ve learned that Mediawiki adds these special tags. As long as there is no computerized benefit to spammers, I’m feeling that it’s okay to have ugly spammer
links in the edit history, since few people will look at the edit history.
Going forward, Wiki editing is going to be opt-in. It’s volunteer work. We’ll ask people to send submissions to elves@thinknola.com and process the information as a group.
Enough techincal talk. If you are interested in helping on the Wiki, let me know. We’ll have a Wiki day at Rose Nicaud where we can learn about Wikimedia markup.

It’s a shame that some people have to abuse a community resource like a wiki. Spamming wikis is really a form of web based graffiti. Good luck with the wiki moving ahead.
It is truly a bummer, Ed. However, now that the Wiki is getting trafficked by New Orleanians, I’m removing the request a login, so anyone can create an account, and if that works out, I’ll lift the account requirment. If Arborwiki can do it, so can we.
I do hope that Wiki spam subsides when it is constantly erased. What is the point of creating links when they are all rel=”nofollow” links anyway?
