Weekend Coworking at Bayou Coffee House
I’m going to work on the recovery of New Orleans from the comfort of the Bayou Coffee House at 326 N Jefferson Davis Pkwy, New Orleans, LA on Saturday, Sept 1st, 2007 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Joining me will be Charles Burck who’ll be adding Irish Channel content to the New Orleans Wiki and Dr. Eban Walters who will be developing a mental health resources section of the New Orleans Wiki. Bring your laptop and join us in civic coworking.
What is coworking? It’s where solo professionals who do not share a common employer share a common space to gain the productivity and collaboration that comes from working in an office environment. You can read all about it in Where the Coffee Shop Meets the Cubicle in Businessweek. You can peruse some fabulous coworking sites in other cities in the coworking blog.
Civic coworking the follow on to the unconference. Many of us are now full-time professional citizens. 24/7 citizens who are working closely with their elected officials and their government, but we’re all working solo, under loose organizations with little support. Civic coworking is a way for us to come together and get things done, collaborate, or just gain the focus that comes from a study group.
If you have some work to get done, a grant to write, an ordinance to read, a spreadsheet to crunch, let us know you’ll be by with by leaving us a comment in the comments section of this post.

I’m in town this weekend and will stop by with my sister, who lives in the Marigny. See you then.
I might be knocking out a wall but if not I need to work on the final touches of a paper on recovery in the Freret neighborhood. I may need some assistance with converting to pdf.

It would be great to have you join us. I can turn Word into PDF on my MacBook. All you’d have to do is email it to me.
Which brings up a great point. If you want help with something, ask for it now in the comments of this post, and maybe someone will decide to attend merely because they can offer the help you need.
Still, when you come to coworking bring work that needs to get done. I’ll be working on the Mothership Foundation fund raising package, if anyone from the Bayou Boogaloo list wants to stop by and help me process words.
Susanne
Yup. See you then.
What a cool concept. If I can catch a break I’ll at least stop by, seeing as how it’s just a couple blocks from home.
Thank you Bart. And thank you Matri Venkat-Ramani for the “Making Civic Sexy”:http://vatul.net/blog/index.php/1451/ panel at Rising Tide 2 where I was introduced to Eban.
Sounds like we could have a nice productive little group. Right now I’m focused on pulling together a list of resources for people who need mental health services NOW. But my efforts are in a very early stage so any ideas are welcome from anyone interested
Eban
Here is a resource that I started:
I just came across your blog and, unfortunately, too late to attend the workgroup you guys had on Saturday. I was at a community homebuyer seminar teaching the 203(k) renovation loan product and its’ coordination with LRA, SBA and other grants.
Is there any need for education, outreach, planning, training, coordination of renovation loan programs available? I have the HUD 203(k) and the Fannie Mae Homestyle renovation loan products available. I am a Renovation Lending Specialist at Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.
Let me know if that’s a need. I would love to help and this is my small way to do so.
