I will be there with a future New Orleanian who gives one week out of every month of her life in Minnesota to help out here. Her daughters will be with us too.

And I will be in black, and in the role of Priestess/Minister (Didn't know I was ordained, 'eh?).

Those who show up are there for ALL of New Orleans, and we are the witnesses of what happened to our city.

Let's make this gathering one of great importance.. of the utmost gravity. We will be there to make a silent statement: we will not go easily into the Darkness, but for now... we ARE watching. Bide this tryst America: We are watching and judging.

[...] I am planning to take the day off work and attend the field hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, which is being held here in New Orleans on Monday. The title of the hearing is “Hurricanes Katrina and Rita: Outstanding Need, Slow Progress.” Details and discussion here. I will be wearing black. I will take notes. I encourage any locals who are able to do the same. Let’s pack the place. [...]

[...] The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs is holding a field meeting in NO Monday the 29th (yes, Monday) starting at 9 a.m at the LA Supreme Court, 400 Royal St. The Senate committee announcement is here and there are more details at Think New Orleans. The idea is “to listen respectfully” but “If you want to make a statement, wear black.” The best statement probably is to be there, to not let things happen in secret right out in the open.
Will there be seating for the public inside the building, at the actual hearing? If so, I'm sure the number of available places will be far fewer than the number of interested parties likely to show up.

I have a 10 am doctor's appointment; it's probably not feasible for me to come to the French Quarter, get a parking place in time to be present at the hearing when it begins at 9am, and then to leave after the first half-hour for my appointment. However, if it's to be an all-day affair, I could arrive noonish ~ if there would still be room for me inside (very unlikely) or if any demonstration would still be ongoing outside.

Please, everyone and anyone, do NOT attend this event with the intent of being disruptive. Such behavior won't help anyone, and would undoubtedly hurt our cause in the eyes of many skeptical folks, not only officials but also ordinary Ameican citizens outside our immediate area.

The only observers not likely to be offended and turned off by disruptive behavior are those who are already on our side anyway; we need to make a persuasive case with folks who are NOT already outraged, i.e., people who are not yet familiar with what's actually going on here. A reasonable, well-behaved presentation of the many undeniable facts demonstrating governmental incompetence is what we need to show the outside world.

Democracy is supposed to allow for the voice of the people to be heard. At this hearing, the only one speaking is the various governments. Congress needs to be petioned to hold a public hearing where those effected can speak.

I am afraid this has the makings of a giant finger pointing session especially in light of accusations which just came out.

After the governor of Louisiana gave Entergy a 200+ million dollar grant of the people CDBG funds, and Entergy agreed to lower rates, that has not happened. On one hand the rates wered lowered, but on the other hand the do not allow people entergy bills to be a day late before they are cutting off their entergy, and they are taking meters instantly. Per Katrina they would allow bills to run into the next month and would never take meters from homes. The disconnecting of bills after one day late cause people to pay reconnection fees. The removal of meters are also costing people additional funds. Therefore, the lowering of bills isn't very realistic. They are getting those funds through disconnecting service and removing meters.

it is very important to make a statement, how about wearing black in memory of the lives lost in the flooding caused by the levee failures. we are no better off today than before katrina, with no plan for improvement. what a shame!

Please bring up the closing regulations that require contractors to have W9 forms, etc., and to make great allowances for people who can do the repairs themselves..........as many have already done. My husband in our home in Chalmette has already purchased many items for the repair of our home and would like reimbursement for these purchases...........and the LRA monies to complete the repairs. He can do it himself..........he only needs a licensed electrician to wire the house, and for this he has already made the preparations. This is so important.

We are engaged in the process like it or not. To be disruptive ensures that you will be unable to hear what is being said. That what is being said will then be said behind closed doors.

We have had enough closed door conversations. The power of witness should not be diminished

Very important to be at that hearing, and possibly disrupt it with posters, shouts and catcalls. Is this a government by and for the people? Not unless the people assert themselves and make their voices heard. New Orleans citizens and citizens of the Gulf Coast must stand up and demand the rebuilding of their communities, which must include the rebuilding of the wetlands. Our government wages war while our infrastructure crumbles. Who is profiting off of this war? Rally at 12 noon this Saturday against the war at the Federal Court Building, corner of Poydras and Camp.

Pasting from http://lists.riseup.net/www/arc/noheat/2007-01/msg00045.html

January 21, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -

Jan 21, 2007: HANO Seeking To Bar Residents From Homes

New Orleans, LA (January 21, 2007) — St Bernard residents and supporters will hold a press conference at 11:00AM, Monday January 22 at the Federal Courthouse of New Orleans. Residents will respond to HANO's request for an injunction prohibiting them from entering their homes. Beginning on MLK day, free access to the site enabled families to begin cleaning and rehabilitating their apartments. A statement by members of MayDay NOLA, a housing rights advocacy group currently occupying the development, will be available.

Residents will call for a full investigation of HUD's plan by the Office of the Investigator General. OIG is charged with addressing allegations of waste of taxpayers' monies and serious mismanagement of HUD operations. A recent motion for summary judgment filed in a current suit to reopen the development (available at: http://justiceforneworleans.org) cites HUD documents that show the plans for public housing "will end up costing over $175 million more than extensively modernizing the developments, and upwards of $450 million more than simply repairing them would cost."

"The residents who are cleaning their apartments have current leases and therefore have a legal right to enter their homes," says organizer Endesha Juakali of Survivors Village. Bork, a member of MayDay NOLA adds, "HANO knows they are on morally shaky ground. Without any due process, without any legal eviction, they are trying to eliminate housing for 20,000 human beings here in this city."

The Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have barred public housing residents from returning to their pre-Katrina homes, citing concerns of contamination can claiming, "St Bernard received significant flooding and severe damage." John Fernandez, Associate Professor of Architecture at MIT, inspected the apartments and concluded, "no structural or nonstructural damage was found that could reasonably warrant any cost-effective building demolition." Dr Marty Rowland, a New Orleans civil engineer, assessed that the vast majority of units are habitable with rewiring and restoration of utilities.

"We support the actions of the occupiers and hope that they will help convince HANO and HUD to meet the demands of displaced residents," says organizer Endesha Juakali of Survivors Village. "Mayday NOLA has been willing to take these actions, but it was HUD, HANO, and the Mayor's Office that created the necessity for occupation."

Residents will respond to HANO’s request for an injunction prohibiting them from entering their homes. Beginning on MLK day, free access to the site enabled families to begin cleaning and rehabilitating their apartments. A statement by members of MayDay NOLA, a housing rights advocacy group currently occupying the development, will be available.

Residents will call for a full investigation of HUD’s plan by the Office of the Investigator General. OIG is charged with addressing allegations of waste of taxpayers’ monies and serious mismanagement of HUD operations. A recent motion for summary judgment filed in a current suit to reopen the development (available at: http://justiceforneworleans.org) cites HUD documents that show the plans for public housing “will end up costing over $175 million more than extensively modernizing the developments, and upwards of $450 million more than simply repairing them would cost.”

“The residents who are cleaning their apartments have current leases and therefore have a legal right to enter their homes,” says organizer Endesha Juakali of Survivors Village. Bork, a member of MayDay NOLA adds, “HANO knows they are on morally shaky ground. Without any due process, without any legal eviction, they are trying to eliminate housing for 20,000 human beings here in this city.”

Looks good, Slate.

Also, I'm wondering if the "Court won't stream the hearings on the Internet":http://www.lasc.org/press_room/press_releases/2007/2007-02.asp?

Alan, I just sent a quickie poster with all the info, saved as a .jpg for anyone who wants to use it. It's apparently held up in moderator land. Please take a look and tell me if it's appropriate or not. If so, I'll post it immediately. (Coulda done better if I had more time, but hey, it is what it is.)

Yes. Vigil.

This is just a meeting that we all need to attend. We need to stop and listen. Let's show the US Congress that they are a part of the recovery. When they come to town, we convene to hear what they have to say.

This is very basic participation. I can't tell you how much I've learned, how much I've gained, by just showing up.

Let Think New Orleans be a clearing house for the places that you need to be to really know what is going on.

I don't think we're saying MARCH. We are saying, be there, be a presence, let them know we're watching. The All Along the Watchtower Vigil. Quiet, no placards, no signs, just lots of people so they know that this hearing isn't being held in a vacuum. They need to know that we'll hold them accountable for their statements, their action or their inaction.

Just my opinion, pom pom cutie!
