Think New Orleans

Think New Orleans Group Blog

September 6th, 2005

I’ve established a group blog so we can discuss what we are working on at Think New Orleans.

I’ve told Edward Vielmetti all about this project, and he understands it well. I need to have someone explain the workings of this project to the blogosphere, and I think that should be a group effort.

Please help me by joining this blog and using your narrative powers to help New Orleans.

    Hi,

My name is david mitchell. I work for the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate and I’m writing a story about the use of blogs/message boards at grass roots level to get local information out. I read that one of the reasons this blog was set up is because the big media sites have too much info.
I’d like to talk to Edward and whoever set this up, as well as any of you about how this blog is working.
    My numbers are (O) 225 647-8447 or (C) 985 634-0084.
    Thanks.
Good luck with your pets. In Lake Vista, they have a message board that has developed a running list of missing pets, and I gave the SPCA a copy of it. I don’t know what the disposition of them is at this point.

Is this an idea that never caught on, or what?

Plenty of folks, of course, are using their narrative powers like crazy, scattered all over the internet and with varying degrees of accessibility. Having a single “clearing-house” point of reference would have been a good idea. Might still be worth a try…

    Tom

This was the first post on this blog. Was actually the default first post, the “Hello, World!” post, that comes when you install WordPress. I changed it to say something.

The we I was referring to was the we in Ann Arbor and online that was helping (ugh, was helping? were helping?) to put together the wiki.

This effort started when I was watching the NOLA.com and WDSU forums for news of the flood. I was sitting at the computer clicking reload and I decided that I could start to organize some of what I saw, so I installed a Mediawiki wik that is known as the New Orleans Wiki.

I installed this blog as a group blog for the people who got involved, Ed Vielmetti and Maitri Venkat-Ramani were among those folks, but I didn’t really use the blog until I got back to New Orleans.

So, it might sound a little high-falutin’ in this post, that this was going to be a voice of we the City of New Orleans. When I say us these days, I tend to mean us New Orleanians.

At the time it was for us wiki managers.

And yes, I have posted work from many different people, including yourself. I’ve always thought about how one could encourage more submissions, good submissions.

There seems to be a lot of resistance to publishing on the web in New Orleans, which is a shame because you really only ever end up attracting more attention, collaboration and resources when you use this new medium.

It’s only when you neglect to moderate that you get the sort of rancor in the NOLA.com comments.
