GIS Workshops at Trinity Christian Community: How to Create Your Own Maps for Presentations and Proposals
Through the Broadmoor Project, Think New Orleans has obtained three licenses for ArcGIS that I’ll be installing on the computers at the Trinity Christian Community.
- What: GIS Coworking
- Where: Trinity Christian Community Center at 3908 Joliet St, New Orleans, LA (map)
- When: Please complete this schedule poll to help us choose the right time: GIS Coworking Schedule Poll.
What Is Coworking?
Coworking is a concept that comes out of Silicon Valley. Solo professionals got tired or working out their rec-rooms or else shlepping it all to the Starbucks. They created these offices where you could have a desk, and share a space with other independents and freelancers.
These spaces are called coworking spaces. They are offices for freelancers.
This gives people the benefits of office space. They get to separate work from home, have a place for work, and have office mates that they can tap for assistance on projects.
From these coworking spaces, new collaborations are formed.
Neighborhood Coworking
This model is perfect for those of us working in the neighborhoods.
Here are the differences. While we are individuals, we are usually part of an organization. That organization does not have a workspace and it does not keep office hours. We work on projects when we can find the time.
With a coworking space, we could come together to work in bursts. We have to produce a lot of documents, mine a lot of data, and do a lot of research. We do collaborate, but we tend to work on a specific section alone. I’m sure that we could get a lot more done if we spent more time working together.
The coworking concept is another Silicon Valley model for New Orleans to adapt. It is a model for knowledge workers. The work of the neighborhood groups in recovery has been primarily knowledge work.
GIS Coworking
The Trinity Christian Community has an outstanding computer room, with dozens of Mac and PC laptops. The laptops are wireless. They are untethered. You can move them around and find a comfortable spot to work.
We can get together to create richly detailed maps using ArcGIS, develop new data sources by map coordinates to the data we have, and create interactive maps using Google Maps.
Help me choose a time for this event by completing this schedule poll. Let’s talk about project ideas in the Think New Orleans mapping forum, where the discussion of mapping projects is already under way.
