Gentilly and H3
Participants:
Planning District 6
- Marty Rowland (board member of the Gentilly Civic Improvement Association (GCIA), Chair of its Infrastructure and Quality of Life Committee, Co-Chair of its Planning Committee)
- Karen Parsons (Co-Chair of GCIA’s Planning Committee)
- Nikki Najiola (a leader within the Oak Park neighborhood organization)
H3
- John Hoal (Principal)
- Derek Hoeferlin (Project Manager)
Participants discussed strategies for dealing with abandoned properties, revitalization of the corner of Gentilly and Elysian Fields (as the “crux” of the area), economic revitalization in general, areas where Gentilly’s already extensive planning might be improved upon, assistance for people trying to restore their homes, balancing the need for more open schools to bring families back with the need for more children to keep schools sustainable, and H3’s experience with historic neighborhoods with diverse architectural styles.
Hoal’s experience as the Director of Planning and Urban Design for the city of St. Louis during their 1993 and 95 floods provided some specific examples of strategies for economic development and assistance to homeowners, and Derek Hoeferlin (who lived in New Orleans for 10 years and worked on Gentilly’s Brother Martin High School) joined the discussion on the potential of the intersection of Gentilly and Elysian Fields.

I’ve tried to listen to two different GCIA interviews and find them very difficult to hear. Maybe other listeners have better speakers or can turn their sound up louder.
It’s starting to get better as I listen more–still difficult, but at least possible to hear.

Mary – Would you like me to burn a CD for you? Where you listening to this one in particular?
