Birds Eye View of Iberville (nee Storyville) Housing Development
5 of 5: Storyville superimposed on the Iberville Housing Project by Ben Ledbetter, Architect.
In the above photograph, the area that was “zoned” for prostitution in Storyville is super-imposed on the Iberville housing development.
I plan to post prospectuses for a work I am devising for Iberville, as well as a revision to that interrupted Tulane studio, in these pages soon. Meanwhile, any information, contemporary or historical; factual, anecdotal or otherwise, that anyone has regarding the area outlined in the image above would be most welcomed.
I would also appreciate any of you directing other flickr users to me who you think may have information or interest in these issues.
Please leave comments at the Flickr page for the photograph so Ben Ledbetter can read them.
If you are interested in creating your own maps, you can join the discussion at the Think New Orleans maps forum.

Thanks for this great information. I just wanted to point out that this is by no means a list of every city demolition. MANY homes outside of these boundaries have been demolished.
I don’t know what lists they are on, if any. This is really a travesty.
When the real big picture of what the city is doing becomes evident, people will be weeping if not cursing and screaming. Those of us who had unsolicited and unannounced demos certainly have been doing all of that.
Sorry,
I appended the prior comment to the wrong story. It was supposed to go on the map of city demos post.
I would like to add that our house was demolished in 70122 without notice but is not on the list. I wonder just how many there are like that?
Do you think the mayor is telling the truth when he says he knows of only 4 demos in which the owner has complained that it was erroneous?
How many folks have actually complained of demo without notice? How many demo lists are there? Is the press on vacation as usual?
I would be happy to send you a copy of a hand-drawn map of Storyville from 1945 that was an insert in a book on Jazz that Esquire put out in 1946. It measures 18×24″ and has the names of a lot of the brothels, buildings, etc. in the area. The area is the same as what is in red on the map shown above. Please email me if you would like a copy of it.

Juliette I would love to get a copy of that map if possible. I am writing a book chapter on public housing “The Big Four” and Iberville. Thanks, Sheila

hello Juliette….if you still have that photo or any of the bldg’s of Storyville other than what’s in Al Rose’s book I’d sure like one. I’m working on a project about the district and pictures of the clubs and houses are difficult to come by.
thank you,
