Think New Orleans

Attention Getters

August 12th, 2006

The New Orleans bloggers will host a conference, the Rising Tide Conference, from August 25th to August 27th. Mark Folse, the writer of the Wet Bank Guide, has asked them to vote for an article on Reddit.com.

Reddit is a social bookmarking and ranking web site. People submit an article, and then they are able to vote on the article, and comment on the article.

There are similar systems, such as Digg. There’s an article at Digg for Rising Tide as well, now that I’ve added it.

You can also Digg some two articles about Outsourcing Democracy. How did this get on Digg? Someone from Ann Arbor put it there. Note that in the comments at Digg, I thank people for taking in an interest in New Orleans. Play the ball as it lies.

Of course, the best way to get attention, it so pay attention to who’s paying attention to you already. When people take notice of you, and your Katrina Cottages, or the land use of the 9th Ward, you can take notice of them, by leaving a message in the comments.

Why reinforce negative attention? Why not reinforce sincere, yet causal interest, and let it become active particiation in the conversation about our beloved New Orleans?

Alan, isn’t that like inviting Google into the deepest reaches of my computer? Aren’t I supposed to be afraid of that?

You just invited Firefox into your computer, why are you not afraid of them?

Seriously, what is the concern? Do you think that Google Tool bar is going to transfer your files to Google? There are laws against that.

I haven’t had a chance to read this entire article (I just searched for something that was talking about), but its along these lines. Online privacy is the wild west.

It makes me no end of happy to have people talking about privacy and equity in information at Think New Orleans. I’ve glossed over the artilce. During my blogging time I’ll read it some more.

My short answer is that it iis that these are good questions, but at the same time Google Toolbar has a nice spell checker.
