A Dutch Joke In Poor Taste Pays Off

January 25th, 2008
Ha! Ha! The collapsed floodwalls are so funny!

Bulldozing the classic architecture of the Lower 9th Ward for this by Winy Maas.

The Brad Pitt / Make it Right 9 brouhaha includes architectural drawings of houses that are collapsed, as if a surge of water hit them. It is the work of Dutch design firm MVRDV and architect Winy Maas. When I inquired about this though the grapevine, it was explained that this was an architect’s political statement, not a too clever and cruel joke played on the residents of the Lower 9th Ward. Well, now it appears that they are going to erect some of these architectural abortions.

Love the renderings.

Just in case the collapsed house was not insulting enough, there’s added touch of the Sanford and Son pickup up truck in the car port. Put your hand over your heart and repeat after me: “I’m coming to join you Elizabeth! This is the big one!”

Okay. No comments. Here’s on for you…

We wanted Dutch flood protection and instead we get this. Here’s a deal: Can we trade you our civil engineers for your civil engineers, but we’ll each keep our own architects.

Inspired by Joanna Russ, I must note: Those aren’t abortions, they’re premature ejaculations.

Someone is actually going to waste donated money by building these stupid houses?

Whoever is behind this asinine idea should be forced to live there for at least a year. Hope they have fund trying to keep their furniture in place on those slanted floors.

Checking out the drawings in section the floors are actually level and the split level space inside the house would be really nice. I agree the exterior looks like crap and the same interior effects could be achieved without trying to look like a wreck.
