12 Trees Planted at Desmare Park
Wow, what a great turnout for the tree planting at Desmare Park on April 11th. Monique Pilie of www.hikeforkatreena.com donated 12 trees to Desmare Park and about 25 people showed up to plant them! Not bad for a Wednesday afternoon.
In just over an hour 12 trees were planted. A real tribute to the hard working people who came out to help.
Bobby Wozniak directed the operation. Monique Pilie gave a short class on proper planting techniques and then everyone grabbed a shovel! Patsy Grace, Marco Rosamuno, Juli Van Brunt, Terese Joseph, Fred Bowles, Nick Cangemi, Pam Congemi, and Mary Claire Hartman were just a few of the many enthusiastic volunteers.
Faubourg St. John Neighborhood Association President Kate Parker helped shaped the park for the coming generations. FSJNA board members Dan Samuels and Mike Ernst were busy digging when fellow FSJNA board member Tommy Usdin stopped by to show his support.
Charlie London was instrumental in getting the project going. He designed, printed, and distributed flyers throughout the area to promote the event. He prepped and painted the basketball goals, coordinated the event, and helped with the planting of trees. Bob McGuire, Bobby Wozniak, and David Armond were also instrumental in making the event a success.
Bobby Wozniak and David Armond brought water and supplies for everyone. They also met previously at the park with Monique Pilie of hikeforkatrina.com and Keith Bleachner of Parks and Parkways to map out a layout for the planting of the trees. Green Ash, Live Oak, Nuttal Oak, Crape Myrtle, Fringe, Cypress, and Sweet Bay Magnolia were the various types of trees planted in Desmare Park.
Bob McGuire, Bobby Wozniak and David Armond are no strangers to park improvements having raised money and renovated Fortier Park in record time after it was inundated by Hurricane Katrina.
